GONGWON

GONGWON is about the relationship between the body, culture, and technology. The garments are constructed and built with very traditional techniques. The garment is shibori (resist) dyed and also batik dyed for the image in the center. The challenge becomes about how a traditional, organic technique that had been used for centuries and traditions can translate to a tracking image for augmented reality. The AR digital object serves to layer that romanization and translation with the physical landscape of Korea (how nature is conveyed).

“WON” is a word in English that means winning in the past tense, but also is the name of the South Korean currency. Similar to won, “GONG” has multiple meanings in both Korean (ball and zero), and English. When these words combine they phonetically make up the word gong-won which means park.
